USS Guam LPH-9 Guest BookFrom the Marines by SSgt Juan C. Andrade on December 29, 2006 at 3:44 PM Just wanted to add my two cents worth, I had the pleasure of serving aboard the USS Guam from August 1990 until April 1991. When I set foot on the ship I was a Corporal of Marines, and by the end of the deployment I was a Sergeant of Marines. During the deployment we took part in operations Desert Shield / Desert Storm, and the highlight of our deployment was the evacuation of 289 souls from the troubled city of Mogadishu Somalia; the evacuation was designated as operation Easter Exit. I did not know until recently that the ship was used as target practice and sunk as a result of it, I think it would have been better if she would have been moored somewhere as a floating museum. It is rather sad to think that such a marvelous ship with such a colorful history can be dispossed of in such a manner, I am really lucky to have called her my home for those eight grueling months with such a heavy operational tempo.
